Lake Eola was originally owned by Jacob Summerlin, a wealthy investor in the Orlando area during the late 1800's.
The land was right by a sinkhole, but Summerlin bankrolled the creation of a scenic park from the land he had given to Orlando.
That sinkhole was later filled with water, and now this reservoir covers 23 acres of land, with a maximum depth of almost 24 feet. There are close to three miles of shoreline and the average depth is 11 feet.
Lake Eola isn't the typical lake destination. The proprietors wanted to make it more of a creative source for entertainment. For that reason, multiple picturesque public works were constructed in Lake Eola Park.
This includes a classic Chinese pagoda (or gazebo), a gigantic fountain that features light shows, and the Walt Disney Amphitheater. The Amphitheater hosts many community events and various performances year round.
Lake Eola expressly prohibits swimming, fishing, and boating with the exception of events that take place during the year.
In order to take part in these activities during events, the prospect would need to obtain written consent from the Orange County Parks and Recreation Department.
